WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW GOING IN...

The easiest way to explain the difference between therapy and coaching is to explain "emotional processing." When a person has an emotional experience (whether negative or positive) we may take some time to "think about" that experience, examine how it made us feel, what it meant, what were the lessons learned, how can we change things OR how can we get MORE OF that experience. All of these things involve examining, understanding, and working through the emotions we have experienced and what they mean for us in this journey of life.  This is called "processing." We do this on a day to day bases even without realizing it, sometimes in a healthy way, sometimes not. But as therapist, OUR job, is to help client's learn to process through their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a POSITIVE way so that they can achieve the behavior, mood, and functionality they desire.

This is where coaching differs from therapy.  Coaching involves NO processing of emotions.  Coaching is essentially takes a "solution-focused" sort of approach.  We examine the problem, we brainstorm solutions, we set goals, and we track progress for accountability.  If there is a "mindset" blockage hindering the process, we can certainly address the challenge, but whereas therapy may explore the causes and belief systems driving the blockage, coaching will specifically deal with the damaging mindset itself (solving the problem) so as to achieve the goal.  Coaching

I would like to also share this very important note: although there are several "technical" differences between coaching and therapy, the two major differences are: 1) the limitations on the coach's ability to treat certain conditions; and 2) the limitation of the therapist to treat clients outside their jurisdiction.    Coaching should never involve the assessment, diagnosis, or treatment of mental health related disorders.  If you are seeking the assistance of a "coach" who is reportedly treating you for a mental health related condition, please be aware that the individual is breaking the law and considered "practicing therapy without a license."  Also, recent years have also had scammers claiming to "train" people to become therapist.  Please be aware that to become a "Licensed Therapist" requires at least a Masters Degree, post graduate clinical hours of supervision, and state board approval.  Anyone making any claims to be a "trained therapist" who is unable to provide a state licensure number that can be verified via the state board of Mental Health website, RUN! And don't look back.

** It's important to know going in that coaching is NOT therapy.

They are NOT the same.**

produce documentation from Coaching specifically focuses on the client's present challenges and establishing the necessary plan of approach to move beyond those challenges and on to said goals.

If you believe that you are in need of assistance for anxiety, depression, mood changes, or any other Mental Health condition, please speak to a qualified Mental Health professional, as coaching would not be a good fit for you at this time.

Second, coaching is also different from therapy in that therapists are limited to only treating clients who reside in the the state for which the therapist has been licensed.  For example, a therapist who has been licensed in Florida cannot treat a client who lives in Tennessee (unless that therapist also has a therapy license in Tennessee).  In contrast, because there is no official regulatory board for coaches, coaches are not restricted to a particular jurisdiction. A coach is free to assist clients in a multitude of places.

I would love to share more about it.
